Vance did his best to listen patiently as Mia recapped her call with Leo. They’d left Wurth and the forensic techs as the body was being loaded into an ambulance. Mia continued to fill him in as she drove to the Eighth, her voice tight with frustration.

“Leo and Emma are staying there with MPD.”

“There? Where’s there?”

She glanced at him but didn’t reply right away. They’d arrived at the precinct, and she pulled them into an alley alongside the building where cruisers were parked. “At Renfield’s place. Emma and Leo are sitting on his apartment with MPD.”

She got out without saying another word, and Vance wanted to kick himself.

Try as he might, he couldn’t focus on anything except how out of the loop he felt.

First, Emma could see ghosts, and everyone but him was ready to believe her. Even Jacinda, who he thought for sure would be a voice of reason, said she’d “keep an open mind.” Then the SSA got called off to testify before Congress and left Leo in charge.

Not like I’ve been doing this job longer than him. Oh, no, let’s give the interim-SSA slot to the newest guy on the team.

Vance knew Leo and Jacinda were colleagues in Miami, but being passed over, with a double homicide on their hands, did more than rankle him.

You’re pissed off, and with good reason. But showing how much won’t get you anywhere.

He’d keep his cool and do the job. And maybe he’d consider asking about a transfer to another field office.

Mia held the door open for him but didn’t even look his way as he passed. “Thanks.” He reached out to hold the next door as she came through and went straight up to the dispatcher’s desk.

He pulled out his identification as he joined Mia. The curly-haired Black woman at the desk glanced at their badges. “Special Agent Vance Jessup. This is Special Agent Mia Logan with me. We’d like to speak to anyone who might’ve worked closely with Dalton Renfield.”

The woman’s name tag identified her as Sergeant Clark. She typed at her keyboard, and Vance shifted to the side to give Mia more room beside him. Her elbow brushed his, and she flinched in response.

This distance between them wasn’t what he wanted. But maybe if this was the path their relationship was going to take, a transfer wouldn’t be the worst thing.

“Head up to the fourth floor.” Sergeant Clark scribbled something on a sticky note and passed it to Vance. “Ask for Detective Carter. I’ll give a call upstairs and see if I can’t get him to meet you.”

Vance nodded his thanks but had to force the smile that usually came so naturally to him.

Even in the elevator, he couldn’t help being distracted by the swarm of frustrations plaguing him. He shoved himself into the corner, as far from Mia as possible. If the team hadn’t been lying, then Emma and her ghosts had helped every one of them, except him and Jacinda.

He still couldn’t get his head around the SSA being open to the idea of ghosts in the first place, but Jacinda had made her stance clear.
